Car: 1985 & 1991 Trans Ams
Engine: 350 in both
Transmission: Auto in both
Axle/Gears: 3:23 Limited Slip in both
EGR & Free Flowing Exhaust
Hi All! Both my 85 and 91 TAs with TPI engines constantly set a code 32 (EGR). I thought I remember reading years ago that a free flowing exhaust might have something to do with that. Is this true? Thanx!

Carbon fouling the pintle in the EGR valve can stop the vacuum from holding, after the EGR solenoid trys to shut off vacuum supply to the valve (the purge command).
If that doesn't work, you have to jump the EGR solenoid to 'make' the EGR hold open. Then you can find a vacuum leak, like so:

Certain of the EGR valves "require" a certain amount of exh back pressure to insure "spec" flow. Which might or might not have ANYTHING WHATSOEVER to do with how the engine runs; might only affect the number the motor blows on a California dyno.
Using an aftermarket one with the replaceable washers allows you to find a washer size that (a) makes the light go out, and (b) has minimal detrimental effects otherwise. Slavishly adhering to the "factory specs" is not your friend here. It's a TUNING thing: you experiment until you find what YOU like best on YOUR motor in YOUR car doing whatever YOU do with it with the fuel YOU buy in the places YOU go at the times YOU go there etc. etc. etc. IOW, just keep changing it as long as it gets "better" to YOU, until any further change you make results in it being "worse" to YOU.

I sure appreciate the replies. I have owned these cars for many years and they have always set a code 32 (EGR) since I have added the SLP cat-back systems on them, also many years ago. After first noticing the check light I would replace the valve and solenoid and the light would still come on, usually after a few miles of highway driving. Thanx again!
