Burning oil?
Hi,
I have a 89 rs with a carbed 350 engine...not the original engine.
When I go to start the car up, I will notice cloud of blue smoke and then while the car is idiling no smoke will appear, but when I go to Rev her up blue smoke will come out again, valve covers are loose, but I don't know how to tighten those up to proper specs...also I am running mobil 1 5w30,just bought the car and did an oil change immediately.the dip stick reads full.
Thoughts? Please don't tell me the engine is bad.engine appears strong..the car was originally 2.8 but that was swapprd with this 350...mileage is unknown.
Thanks guys.

Re: Burning oil?
Valve guide seals sound to be the culprit. Mine have been leaking and burning oil for 5+ years now. You'll have to keep an eye on the oil level, and if yours is as bad as mine, it'll foul out a plug(s) every once in a blue moon.
Just to be on the safe side, replace your PCV valve(~$5-10) and inspect the vacuum port on the carb for oil getting in that way. Not as common but I've seen it before.
First thing that needs to be addressed though are your "loose" valve covers.
If you have an earlier head design there's two bolts on top, two on bottom. Replace the gasket and tighten them up working corner-to-corner rather than top-to-bottom. If you can't torque to spec, then at the very least get them snug so they aren't leaking on to the manifolds or at all to say the least.
If it's a newer model 350, then there are four bolts on the face of the cover, the above applies to these as well, but tighten from the inside-out.
Also as a note, I've had good luck switching to 20W-50 high mileage oil(GTX)
Didn't solve my leaks/burn but slowed it down.

Re: Burning oil?
Very helpful buddy, thank you!
I was just doing some research, sounds to me like it's not that big of a deal if I'm burning oil...like you said, you have been driving yours for 5 plus years now, lol.

Re: Burning oil?
I forgot to mention, the car also has true dual glasspacks exhaust and its only smoking out of the right exhaust..the left side isn't smoking at all.
What could that be?
What could that be?
