chugging and lurching when idling

Hey guys, I bought this beater '88 IROC last summer as a first car and I've been running into problem after problem with it. The main issue now is that the car will sometimes (more often than not) lurch back and fourth when I'm stopped at lights and such, pushing against the brakes and trying to inch forward. It doesn't help that my brakes barely work, so I have to put my entire body weight on the pedal to keep the car still. Not sure what it could be, and my trans fluid seems fine.

Sounds like your brake booster isn't working or hooked up to vacuum which is why you are having to push the breaks so hard and if the vacuum leak is there could cause the engine to rev up and down in rpm. I'd look on the driver side you have your break booster and should have a hose going from it, make sure it's hooked up and you don't hear any vacuum leak in or around it.

Oh yeah, I know the vacuum's busted. It's not even plugged in. You think that's causing the chugging?

Very good chance it is, your engine needs the vacuum can't have vacuum leaks, if the booster is busted make sure it's plugged so it's not leaking.
