cracked nose on starter

Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 2.73
cracked nose on starter
I took my starter off and the nose was cracked. my question is how there was No shims on the starter so maybe it needs one how can I tell or could something else crack it? flywheel looks good No nawed teeth
