Where to start?

Hi, im semi-new here, posted a few times but am on almost daily looking and learning.

The car i'm working on is a 1990 Iroc Camaro, with a 305 and T5 Transmission.

When I bough the car it would stumble on the throttle, and sometimes it would stall while driving, and not restart. No cranking or anything. Tested my injectors, found they were bad, replaced them. Car ran well, took it to Aircare (emissions testing) and the car died while it was being tested. Car would not restart, again no cranking. Tested the coil and found that to be bad, replaced it as well as the ignition control module and cap and rotor.

This is where I am today. I still have a few problems with the car.

1: Sometimes when I go to start the car it will not start at all, no cranking or clicking. I suspect this to be a VATS problem but do not know how to test it.

2: When the car does run, it runs rough. Throttle response is poor, exhaust smells very rich, idle surges, and sometimes there's a whining noise from under the plenum.

I have pulled the codes on the car and all I get is code 12, Which means no trouble codes if I am correct.

Just wondering where I should go from here, What to test next? I try not to throw money at parts that aren't bad in the first place, This car just seems to be a never ending problem.

Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post!

Re: Where to start?

If the car doesn't start at all sometimes the sensor that's hooked to your clutch may be bad, have you tried bypassing it? (i.e. unhooking it and making it where the car will start w/out the clutch pressed?)
Clearly you wouldn't wanna leave it that way, but if your battery and everything is fine that'd be the first thing I'd check.

For running rich, check the o2 sensor(s) and see if they need replacing. Some of the fuel injection guys will be able to give more passed this I'm sure too.

Re: Where to start?

BTW if you do unhook that sensor you can't just leave it unhooked and expect it to work, you have to run a jumper wire on the connector that it plugs into (connecting the circuit).

Thank you for the reply, I had not even thought of this! Where would I find the sensor?

Re: Where to start?

No problem!

My '83 is an automatic, however, on every manual that I've seen the sensor(or switch, whatever you wanna call it) is located somewhere up near where the clutch assembly attached to the car, if you stick your head in your floorboard and look up behind the pedals you should see it. It's usually some type of pressure switch that gets pressed when you press the clutch in, does that make sense? Once you locate it just follow the wires, unplug it, and stick your jumper wire into the other end of the plug(the one that doesn't go back to the switch).

If I find a diagram or something I'll post it on here, but it should jump out at you when you look.
