Re: cleaning/washing k&n air filter in dishwasher

I agree with the wife issue. Why not put it in the dishwasher? Because of the heater element and the oil dripping onto it?

#1 problem, the wife. 2nd the oil. 3 Most dishwasher detergents have chlorine in them. Liable to eat the material of the filter more than the jets will.

Re: cleaning/washing k&n air filter in dishwasher

Where did you find the air filter ? Looks like it came out of a hole in the ground.
Anyway ,its not rocket science but the cotton gauze in the filter works using the tiny fibers within the cloth. They overlap in a delicate manner and that is why you only use the correct way of cleaning it listed in the directions.

Or in the OPs case now, a new one. I really don't see it being that much of a chore to do it as the manufacturer recommends.

Well, not necessarily for the air filter, but for other things. So the SO doesn't get POd that you messed up their dishwasher and dishes.

As for the oven dilemma... Some paints (high-heat) require being cured at 200* or so... Smaller stuff I have been known to use a hair dryer on or the sun.

I use a black storage bin with a few holes drilled in the bottom for the gases to escape. Set it on the asphalt in the sun and Whella! you have a parts oven! Filter washing should be done with a hose!

You can get the filter recharge kit by K&N on Amazon for around $10 with Prime. With the price that low I wouldn't bother with trying any new methods. If I tried the dishwasher my wife would also be....upset...irritated...mad.. They haven't created a word with enough intensity yet.

How good are you at kitchen appliance repair? The filter screen and pump in a dishwasher is not likely to do well with the crap that comes out of an automobile air filter.

And then there's the question of oil contamination inside a device you use to clean the kitchenware off of which you eat................................

It's been 5 years since the original poster washed his K&N in the dishwasher , my bet is that the dishwasher has already expired and been replaced with a new one by now , given the relatively short life of dishwashers these days (if it was a couple or more years old when it washed the K&N five years ago , K&N wash or not it's outlived it's designed product service life) .

You might be right, but it's certain that a general lack of common sense didn't end 5 years ago.

I know what I am doing with my old dishwasher now! Hopefully it will tolerate parts washer solvent, so I can put heads, and engine blocks in there

I'm not kidding, like, at all. I got a free electric oven off craigslist for curing Cerakote, and I put a piece of 1/2 steel on the burners for my welding table. Now to make a shelf for a dish washer. I am single BTW, extremely single..... and I have no idea why

Re: cleaning/washing k&n air filter in dishwasher

I stuck an oil pan in my current dishwasher, came out great. Dishwashing detergent cuts through the grease & oil very well. Haven’t tasted anything funny yet, lol.

People that come over to the house to eat get that story, plus the one about the dishwasher ‘pre-wash’ treatment (80 Lb. Black Lab). Heck, sometimes the plates come out so clean we don’t even bother with the dishwasher.

Re: cleaning/washing k&n air filter in dishwasher

I put a scored up piston, seized conrod, and a couple worn valves through an old dishwasher I was about to replace so they'd be clean for my "wall of shame". Should have taken circlips and what was left of the rings off, they got rusty. The wristpin had a surface rust spot that wiped off. The rest just got nice and clean! It didn't remove all carbon from the valves but they looked much better. The aluminum on the piston skirts got some dark splotches. Maybe I should have used a rinse agent.
