larger fuel tank?

So i did a lot of searching on fuel tank/ fuel cell, and couldn't find anything. These cars generally have a 15 gallon fuel tank. Which makes for about a useable 250 mile range. I want a bigger fuel tank - i would like a 20 gallon tank. Has anyone every found a way to do that? i DONT want a fuel cell in the passenger compartment, and most fuel cells are smaller than 15 gallons anyway. The ONLY thing i've found, the price boggles the mind:

Surely there is some place that could fabricate a bigger tank without destroying the car?

If anyone's done it, or knows some place that fabricates, I would GLADLY pay the shipping!

Re: larger fuel tank?

Good luck with that. I think the fuel tank already takes up all the normal available space between the floor and axle. The only way to get more capacity is to start modifying or buy a racing fuel cell.

I can squeeze 17 gallons in my 2000 Firebird tank. Wasn't much fabrication to put it in. Just had to make up some conversion fittings to go from push connectors to regular flared ends. Read up on it. Their are a few threads here that are helpful.

Re: larger fuel tank?

fireburdluvr85 - so are you saying you put a 2000 firebird tank in your 91 firebird? It lists as 16.8gal, so 17 would be close. as the tanks on the IROC were 15.5, thats only about 1 gallon more though.....

I did it because I got the complete tank with pump/ lines for $150. I also have kits to make all my lines to convert. No longer worry about a metal tank rotting. I had a hole in my metal tank. It says 16.8, figure that's recommended fill. Actual fill if you could get the air pocket up top is around 17.5 , but you need that. I live in new england and the stuff they put on the roads destroys our cars if you aren't on top of it daily.
The swap is fairly straightforward. Physically fits easily. Mostly just plumbing that has to be modified. Of course you have to buy the right sending unit or your fuel gauge doesn't read correct. Mine hasn't read right in 2 years now? I don't care since my computer needs it for evap function.
