Junkyard swaps

Just wondering if anybody knows about any other factory heads I can score for the cheap from a salvage car/truck. I have a 1985 305tpi. It stock right now and with little funds junkyards are a great deal. Was wondering also about any other factory parts that may swap over. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Junkyard swaps

You already have the best heads there are for the application at hand. (assuming they're the OE ones of course)

Not much else that will directly bolt on and make much difference to that motor, either; other than a bore kit. But even that, TPI renders far less effective than it might otherwise be.

I'd suggest, your greatest opportunities for improvement, lie elsewhere than where you're looking. Exhaust and TUNING are the biggest bang for the $$$ you can do. Neither of which will be found in a junkyard.

Re: Junkyard swaps

While you MIGHT get lucky and find a decent set of headers at the junkyard, and possibly even a good muffler, but you're more likely to find other goodies at the yards that you can swap in. Things like a 4thgen rear with disc brakes and posi, better rear gears(check S10 & S15 trucks), larger sway bars, Z28 coil springs, and a wonderbar are much more common and while they won't add power to the engine they can make the car more fun to drive.

Since I bought my camaro in 2008 I've picked up several different sizes of sway bars, 3.73 gears from an S10, a quick ratio steering gear, and a 4thgen rear with discs and posi. On the non-performance side I've picked up some leather 4thgen seats, a 4thgen console, lexan t-tops, a replacement console top & lid, and a reverse-opening hood hinge from a Buick.

You can also find decent deals on craigslist, and of course on TGO.

Re: Junkyard swaps

Thanks for all the help. What do you get the quick ratio box from, and how do you determine if its a quick ratio or not. And as far as the reverse hood hinge, how hard of a swap is that? 1 more thing what junkyards do you use. The only u pull it I got to is Harrys. Always glad to hear of more in PA. Thanks again

Re: Junkyard swaps

The quick ratio box was found on some Z28s and probably some of the WS6 Trans Ams as well. I got mine from an88 or 89 Z28. Easiest way to tell if a car has one is to turn the steering wheel all the way to one side, then count the number of revolutions it takes to turn it all the way to the other side. The quick ratio boxes were 2 1/4 turns IIRC.

The reversed hood hinge was not difficult to do, but you'll need access to a welder. Here's the link to my thread detailing how I did the swap:

The best yards in PA are on the eastern side of the state, around Lancaster/Harrisburg/Philly areas. There are a couple of Harry's yards, EZ Pull & Save is a HUGE yard plus they have the fronts of the cars up on concrete highway dividers so it's super easy to get to the undersides. On the western side of the state, there is Millerstown Pic-a-Part north of Pittsburgh, and Sechrist Auto Wreckers near Uniontown.
