'83 Z28 305 H.O Studder for 3 seconds after removing key
Hi Third Gen fans!
I went to shut off the car today and it almost seemed to want to keep running... I heard this may be the carburetor getting too hot and the car seemed to almost not want to start after shutting it down, after some cranking it fired back up, only went on a 7 minute drive across town..
My buddy said he saw some black smoke come from the tail pipe also.
As far as I know the timing may be off, the plugs and wires may need replaced with a new air filter.
The car does have 4.7Gal of regular fuel mixed with 1Gal of plus, if that would make a difference.
Has anyone experienced this issue with the car not shutting down immediately when removing the key?

My car will do that same thing, always called it "dieseling." The reason mine does it is because it can only run on premium fuel (properly that is). If I run 87 or 89 octane it will spit and sputter. Premium and it won't.
With your case however it is most likely a timing issue or there is some build up causing combustion after the car has shut off.
Go buy some sea-foam or some top-engine cleaner (meant to clean the INSIDE of the engine) and use it. Should fix the problem, if not then check your timing
*EDIT* The stuff will make your car smoke like a beast for a few minutes....be somewhere ventilated

That's a good idea I just happen to have some sea foam, that stuff rocks! I usually put 1/3 into my oil, fuel, and brake booster hose, at least on my Chevy Prizm before it got Totaled.
Anyways until today I have had a problem with it not starting, just cranking. I sprayed some carb cleaner in the carburetor and it started right up, but it seems to need that now to start up. I check the cyl #7 spark plug and it was black, but still gapped on spec @ .045in.
I know that some V8s use premium, but this motor uses regular according to the gauge. I heard that someone mentioned that the cylinders will get really hot to the point where if there is any fumes or gas that it will ignite.
I did fluid checks tonight and noticed that the oil is well below 'add' and the coolant is contaminated with orange goo (Somebody probably used stop leak or whatever).
Anyways I will fill it with oil and run some seafoam in it, The person who owned it last said they adjusted the timing, because it sat for about three years so I will check that if the issue occurs after running by these ideas.
Thank you, I will report back soon.

Yeah, it should use regular, that was mostly me just sharing my experience.
Cool, if the plug was black it sounds like it's running really rich and fouling the plugs.
Orange goo...yeehaw, probably wouldn't hurt to flush the system and see if you have a leak and then fix it if your resources allow.

Hahaha I completely agree. I don't know much about carburetors, but heard that they will run rich to warm up the car faster... Unless that was running lean.. eh I can't remember.
I'm going to sandblast the plugs when I get the chance. I just bought this car so I may be in for a head gasket. When I said the plugs were black i couldn't tell if there was a gasoline residue or oil residue... anyways.
