need help choosing a camshaft

hi I need help with choosing witch camshaft to use with my engine. I am 17 and new to working on American cars, and this Camaro is my first chevy. I normally work on Mercedes and subarus. right now I am building up a 5.7 engine. block casting is 3970010, had it bored .03 over and have new rebuild steel internals in it(not cast iron). I have vortec heads that I am going to be porting out and using the valve spring kit from alexsparts http://www.alexsparts.com/valve-spri...d-flat-tappet/
I am going to be using a edelbrock rpm performer intake and a 750cfm edelbrock 4bbl carb. my main goal is a street/strip car that can run around mid 13s on the track. my question is what is the best cam I can use with my limitations from the valve spring kit offerd by alexs parts. thanks for reading

The 1st thing you need to do is determine your compression ratio with the parts you will be using. You will need to know your deck hgt,(distance from top of piston to deck),type & volume of piston in cc's,compressed thickness of headgasket,& actual chamber volume of the heads in cc's.Vortecs are advertised as 64cc,but,that can vary, especially if they have been decked.Once you know the static compression ratio(SCR),you can start looking @ cams to see what you will need to support the other parts & give you an optimum DCR(Dynamic compression ratio). That block your using is prolly 30 yrs old & not a very good platform to build from. You would be way ahead of the game by using a later model roller block. You will also need a Vortec specific intake for those heads.A word of caution about porting those heads. If your not a skilled porter & know exactly what your doing,it is much easier to mess them up than to improve them.

Re: need help choosing a camshaft

thanks for the response. my compression ratio should be 9.5-9.6:1. yes I know vortec heads need a specific vortec style intake. I don't see any problem within the block its just any ordinary cylinder block that I bored .03 over and put in new steel internals.

Re: need help choosing a camshaft

I would recommend a 282 292 style cam, That should be around what your looking for in a cam, good idle yet not to much for the build of your engine
