Car leaking fuel near engine

This morning when I went out to start the car it gave me a moment of trouble, but started. However once I started driving I discovered that I had developed a major fuel leak. I brought the car home and when I stopped the engine a puddle quickly developed underneath the car. The car was running fine, but is leaking.

The fuel tank still holds pressure, when I open the gas cap I can hear the air release.

The leak appears to be from near the throttle linkage.

Any ideas on how much this will cost me to get repaired and how difficult it will be?

Re: Car leaking fuel near engine

My car is a 92 RS Camaro V6.

I managed to get the car to my regular mechanic this morning. (I'm a complete klutz when fixing cars). He quickly found that the leak is coming from a set of hoses underneath the air pump. I'm hoping to hear the full report of the damages by lunchtime. He said they needed to get the air pump out of the way so they could get a closer look.

The leak was very evident when we were diagnosing the problem this morning. If you turned the key to the "on" position fuel would spew from the hoses, but it was hard to see exactly which hose was leaking.

Re: Car leaking fuel near engine

Well, got the car back about 30 minutes ago. I'm going to see if this makes sense.

The mechanic said that my fuel pressure regulator had failed, and did so in a way that allowed fuel to shunt to a hose that went to the air pump. The "leak" was fuel escaping from a pressure valve near the air pump.

He replaced both the regulator and the air pump. I will say the car runs much better now, but I will admit it wasn't cheap.

I'm glad you got things squared away.

It will be in your best interest to continue to read these forums, and any other literature you can to get more comfortable in your mechanical abilities in relation to these cars.

Your 22 year old car is going to be a major money pit for you if you don't do "non major" repair work yourself.
