Loud POP when starting, then nothing!

I just pulled in somewhere, turned my 87 Camaro 305 off real quick. I came back out and turned it over and a loud POP rang out and scared the s#*t out of me, then turned it over again and nothing! Won't turn over, no lights, no clicking, absolutely nothing! Any ideas about what the heck happened?

Re: Loud POP when starting, then nothing!

Any smells associated with said "POP"?

Was it literally a "POP" or a bang (such as metal on metal...or through metal)?

Have you opened the hood and done a visual inspection? (i.e. looked and noticed if anything is off...or clearly not where it should be, or if fluids are covering everything)

No smell associated with it, everything looks good under the hood. I just took the battery out and it has no juice. Going to go test it but its less than two years old. No clue what could drain the battery in less than 2 mins, or could cause the loud pop. Sounded like a firecracker.

Re: Loud POP when starting, then nothing!

If your alternator is shot then the engine would have been running on battery and that would have drained it within a trip or two.

The pop, from what you describe, sounds like a backfire. If it starts and runs fine then that may be something to just keep an eye on and see if it makes a habit of doing it. Could need a tune up

Never backfired before, I know that sound. After that pop it was just dead. I cant think of anything that could cause that. Im going to get the battery tested and start eliminating causes. I will be in touch when I return.
