Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

sounds like there was not good contact, making a spark jump and causing heat

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

I had a friend suggest the same scenario .. I guess if the boots too long they will push against dist. and make the spark jump creating heat. do you think the heat would melt bottom of boot???? thanks again.

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

it would sure make a lot of heat, you should be able to take a wire off and look for marks from it arching from the cap to wire

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

They're designed to handle quite a bit of heat. Are you sure they melted? What about detailing or cleaning under the hood with a chemical that may have chemically damaged the boots? Kinda like when oil gets on the radiator hoses and makes them soft?

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

No cleaner used. End of boots look slowly melted . and debris left on top of cap (black melted rubber) just a little but its there I will try and upload pics again later.

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

One other thought came to mind. Are you still running the AIR pump? Doesn't the AIR tubes go behind the block as it goes to the other bank? If you've got a leak there, it would sure put a lot of heat in that area.

All air removed . when I was 19 thought it was a good idea to cut them out. Lol

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

Make sure your rotor and the plug contacts inside your distributor cap aren't all corroded away/broken off before you put on new plug wires. Oh, and make sure the rotor is on straight and fully, too. I've rarely seen melted plug wires at the cap. Usually the coil wire goes first in those cases.

I checked dist and rotor both fine. The wires really got me scratching my head though

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

Yeah, well then maybe the plugs/boots just aren't right for your cap. If it's arcing (even if it's doing so under the insulation where you can't see it), it's making heat.

Re: spark plug wire boots melt on distributer?

the only thing I can think of is the boots Were too long pushing the boot up from the cap. the only problem with that idea is that the end of the boots are melted where they touch the Cap and no signs of arc inside the boot

Well make sure and let us know when you try different wires if it is fixed.
