1987 305cui LG4 - Rebuild

Hi, I am rebulding my 1987 LG4 305, I have read lot of threads about it and I have choosen almost all parts. The only thing I am not sure about is distributor. Can you help me to choose the right one - with best price/performance ratio?
Informations about rebuild - edelbrock perfomer carb and intake, comp 08-422-8 cam, new valvetrain with hydraulic roller lifters and new rockers, 081 heads - ported and polished, shorty Hooker headers with 3" Y-pipe and exhaust kit without cat. I don't need to care about emissions, so I want to get the computer control and emission control system out of the vehicle - is it possible? Does this rebuild make sense? What distributor would you recommend? PS: Do not say to get a 350 sbc, it is very difficult in my country and shipping from US is astronomical. Thanks for all responds.

Re: 1987 305cui LG4 - Rebuild

I would cut the heads for 1.94/1.60 valves and deshroud the intake valves a little. Would really help the low-mid lift flow numbers which will help your torque and hp output.

Do you have to pass an emissions or visual inspection?

Davis Unified Ignition HEI and a Sean Murphy Inductions Q-Jet would be the best setup IMO. Being a manual transmission you do not have to worry about the computers control of the torque converter clutch. I would swap to a set of 059 305 Vortec heads and a performer vortec q-jet intake. If you stick with the 081 heads, go with a performer RPM Q-Jet intake and elongate the center 4 bolt holes for your 081 heads.

Unless you want to be at 2,500+ the whole time you are trying to accelerate while driving, I would reconsider your cam in the 305. Powerband of that cam in a 305 will be about 2,000-6,000 rpm. I would go with the 08-411-8 Comp cam....I know it says its for a 4x4, but with the lack of CID, stock gearing and overdrive transmission you will thank me for saving your low end torque.

The build you have dreamed up will have HORRIBLE driveability, get about 10 mpg, be a slug under 3,000 rpm, and be difficult to get dialed in.

I hope when you say new rockers, you have the correct full roller rockers, roller tip are worthless. Some 87 081 heads need self aligning rockers, others don't.

Re: 1987 305cui LG4 - Rebuild

Thanks for answer.
I forgot one information about my build, I have 3,73 gear ratio.
I really want to keep my 081 heads probably with stock valves (1.82, 1.5), because new heads with shipping to my country will cost to much.
I don't have to pass emissions or visual inspection.
The cam choice was not from my head, it was recomended by comp cam employee. I really don't want to do 10 mpg. 20 mpg will be fine Do you think that cam you have written will work well with my setup?
Rockers I was thinking about are comp cam magnum with roller tip, you think they are worthless? How do I recognize if my heads need self aligning rockers?
