2 part question: vacuum lines/seafoam

This is a two part question post. First question is I always see people suggesting looking for vacuum leaks to sort out a rough idle. Where exactly should I be looking for vacuum leaks? Are there any known culprits? I don't really know where any of the lines run I also know there is a canister somewhere below the battery for EVAP? is it necessary?

Second question is how do you perform a seafoam cleaning? what vacuum line should I let it get sucked up through? I'm afraid to do the wrong line and mess up my motor. also is it safe to throw in crankcase?

Re: 2 part question: vacuum lines/seafoam

For vacuum leaks check any area where a vacuum line connects to and the lines themselves. What you are checking visually for are cracks or breaks. You also need to check gasket surfaces such as the intake manifold or throttle body for leaks. Sometimes you can hear a hissing but the common test for vacuum leaks is to spray starting fluid near the area of the suspected leak. If there is a leak the fluid will be sucked into the motor and change the idle. For the seafoam,I like to remove the brake booster line and pour half a bottle down the line. After that shut the motor off for the time recommended on the can then take the car for a spirited drive which will then blow smoke out the exhaust. The smoke will clear then you are done.

Thanks that is a good idea with the starter fluid.

What do u do with the other half of seafoam? I heard people put it in te gas tank or in the crankcase but I'm hesitant about both
