Thrust bearing width
Does any body have the specs on the thrust bearing for a mid 80's 350 thrust bearing? I'm working on a 350 rebuild for the motor in my IHC Scout and the short block I have has a ton of end play in it, I pulled the rear main cap off and the thrust bearing is very worn and I need to know what the width of the thrust surfaces should be to see if the crank is any good. The bearing is only 1. 710" wide out to out, I have not measured the crank yet. I looked on line for 20 minutes trying to find anything on it. thank you for your help.

Don't know the # off the top of my head; but, since you already know the bearing is farkled, why not just go get a new one and measure it? Then, the crank should be around .005" - .015" loose in it. The exact tolerance is not real critical at all, apart from reading some "spec" in some "book".
Bigger question would be, WHY is that particular thing damaged in your motor, in spite of the fact that in an auto trans setup, it's supposed to see NO FORCE WHATSOEVER. Should be hydraulically balanced at all times with absolutely no front-rear mechanical force on it whatsoever.

I don't know the history of the motor but when I got it it had a T350 trans on it with a cracked flex plate, It may have had a manual trans on it at one time, I have seen HD clutches wear a thrust bearing. I found a thrust bearing from a 267 I pulled apart to use the block to mock up my motor mounts, I set the the bearing in the 350 crank and it has about .030" clearance so I think the crank is toast.
O well, I wanted to build a 383 anyways but I need to figure out how to balance it right, I have to use a internal balanced 168 tooth flexplate that came with the adapter kit, I think I can use one of those counter weight plates that sandwich between the the crank and flex plate. I cant use the 400 flexplate because the weight on the flexplate is in the way of the holes where the IHC torque converter bolts up. the flexplate that came in the adapter kit is just a stock Chevy 350 part with the new pattern drilled on it.
