Massive coolant leak, need help identifying hose
Massive coolant leak, need help identifying hose
Good morning everyone,
My son has a 1986 IROC with a TPI 305. The car has 35k original miles and we have been slowly working to replace items on the car as they wear. Been a fun car and a good learning experience for him (he is 16).
Last night he was driving the car and as soon as the thermostat opened coolant started to run out of the car. It was dripping/streaming from in front of the transmission. I pulled the car into the shop and it had stopped. Turned the car back on and it started to run out again. Finally found where i believe it is coming from. It is a hose that ends right at the top of the radiator just under the cap. The hose is 3/4" or maybe 1/2" in diameter. I can't tell where the hose originates from, i'd say either the back of the intake manifold or possibly the return line for the heater core. It is a combination hose/steel tube. It mounts (picture enclosed) to the inside of the fender on the passengers side and I'm guessing it is steel in that area because of its proximity to the exhaust manifold.
Could someone please help me identify this hose/tube so i can order the correct replacement?
Thanks in advance to everyone who has read and/or helped me with my problem.

Do you have an oil cooler on your car? Could be the coolant lines to the oil cooler.
Hawks sells replacements in aluminum.

or could be the solid lines for the trans cooler (assuming you have an automatic car)
Re: Massive coolant leak, need help identifying hose
That's the heater core return line. It's got a short rubber hose section from one of the heater core nipples to that pipe, back by the firewall, almost behind the engine. Then another short rubber section from the front of that pipe to either the oil cooler lines (that cross over to the other side of the car, if your car is equipped with a factory oil cooler) or directly to the pass. side radiator end tank hose nipple if you don't have an oil cooler.

Thanks for the replies Greenyone and Damon!!
Damon, that is for sure the hose/tube. I was able to see, back by the firewall, where it appeared to have a 'T' in the line.
Does anyone know where I can buy a new hose and tube? I hope this isn't a part that is discontinued!!
Thanks again for the responses, very helpful!!

Any auto part store for the hose. You may have to cut a custom hose to fit. If the metal tube is rusted ot then the junkyard will be your best bet. Otherwise you may have to get creative.

Thanks for all the responses. I found a used 'tube' on Ebay for $31 from an '85 IROC and plan to replace it this weekend.
Hope everyone has a Happy 4th weekend!
