ENGINE MESS

Hi

Im new to this so you'll have to bare with me.
My name is Andy and I live in the UK.
I have recently become the proud owner of a 1987 Camaro IROC-Z TPI, or so I thought at the time.
I knew when I purchased the car that the TPI system had been removed and replaced with a Holley 650cfm carb, but what I wasnt prepared for was the complete butchering of the wiring that I have since uncovered and the state of the engine.
At this present time the engine has been removed and stripped down ready for the machine shop and boy does it need some TLC.
The engine is going to receive a total rebuild, new pistons, valves, etc, etc.
I am an electrician by trade, but the engine bay wiring is sending me nuts at the moment.
Im going to keep the car on a carb set up so can I get rid off all the wiring harness and ECM that fed the injection system or do i need to keep some off it and will everything else work once removed.
thanks for your help

Re: ENGINE MESS

Welcome and congratulations on your IROC-Z! I feel your pain, I just did a HSR install with holley harness and ecm. I tried to cut out everything i didn't need. I cut every sensor and injector wiring out as close to the main harness as possible. Hope someone can help you better than me.

Re: ENGINE MESS

When i switched mine over to carb, I gutted the harness too. I kept the fuel pump relay, cooling fan relay, you will want to keep the two red and one purple 12 gauge wires that go to the starter. You will need some sort of an ignition feed for your coil, tach wire, coolant temp sensor for your gauge, oil pressure sender for the gauge, voltage gauge.
Your best bet is to buy a manual so you can figure out which wires go to and from where, what color they are, and what to keep. It's not a quick job by any means. I had a couple that I cut out and ended up splicing back in once I realized what they were lol. It's going to be impossible without a few different wiring diagrams though, they are a must. You have to watch which harness you go cutting into if you want to leave the interior/lighting completely functional.

Re: ENGINE MESS

Sounds like it might be worth getting a better harness. Lots of people selling harnesses here. Even if it has a couple flaws, sounds like it would be a better starting point.
