EGR bad or something else?

Hello guys,

First post on this forum but I have used it quite a bit in the past to solve a few problems. Not the most car savvy person but I'm willing to research and learn.

So first off, I have a 1988 Firebird with a 2.8l. It hasn't run strong since I got it so I've slowly been getting it back into shape. Recently it has been running really rough so I checked the codes and got #32. I do not mind replacing it but I wanted to know if a clogged catalytic converter as I have been suspicious of it lately. When accelerating past 4k RPM I get a loud rumble coming from around it which I am not sure is from a clogged converter or an exhaust leak.

I notice the car missing bad when trying to accelerate without going to the next gear. I get a really bad shake and it feels like the car is losing a lot of power. Should I start by replacing the EGR valve or catalytic converter?

Converter will not cause the 32 code. Read the link Filled with info to help solve your problem.

Thanks!

It has had a really rough idle lately. One thing I noticed in the article is it says it isn't as noticeable at higher speeds? I am having a hard time getting above 2500 RPM without it missing bad. I notice it worst around the speeds of about 60-85. Above and below it aren't as bad.

Code 32 may not be your only problem. Test the basics like ignition and fuel system. In the meantime examine the egr and see if you find the problem.

Re: EGR bad or something else?

Another note on the exhaust- if you suspect the cat to be clogged or other excessive back pressure problems, you can attach a vacuum gauge to any of the full vacuum ports and accelerate slowly observing the reading. It should be about 20 in. at idle and should remain fairly high until you are at wide open throttle. If the vacuum decreases rapidly and does not rise right away after throttle let off, suspect an exhaust restriction.

Like it said on the EGR notes in the link posted, if you are missing under throttle from idle to +/- 4000 RPM, it is most likely stuck open. If it fails stuck closed, you may not have noticeable any drive-ability complaints.
