Good day all.

I am looking for the proper size of Thrust bushing for my 350. It's a 1976 350 010 block from a auto truck. The reason I am asking is I heard the blocks from auto vehicles had a smaller hole in the back of the crank, not being machined to full size.

Advance auto's site shows me the same bushing for a 76 350 truck, and a 85 305 camaro. It should fit I think just wondering if anyone has dealt with this before. I like to be sure, but it is heard to get under there and measure right now.

That's not a "thrust" thing... it's a "pilot".

The only cranks that were different size were the ones that went with cast-iron Powerglides; about 62 and older. Not an issue with any 350. They had long since figured out by the time the 350 got thought up, that it was cheeeper to make em all the same, than to try to skip a step on some and deal with having 2 part #s further on down the line.

Yes I've dealt with it before... had a 283 that was like that. Same block also took a different size rear cam plug than all the others. There are some things I just don't miss about the 50s and 60s.

 

I cannot get my trans to slide in the pilot bearing for nothing. The alignment tool goes in and out easy, but if you twist it half way around and try to put it back in it is real tight but it will go.

 

Pull the clutch back off and figure it out. Might not be in straight/all the way home. Might have a lip on it. Might be something else.

No way rotating the pilot tool 180* should suddenly make it difficult to insert. Something's whacked.

 

Yep. That's what I will be doing tomorrow. I didn't replace the pilot bushing because it seemed ok when I pulled the car apart. So I will buy a new one tomorrow, pull the blow shield and clutch and replace the pilot and start all over. It sucks because it is a pain to put the motor in buy myself so now I will have to do it all laying on the ground under the car.

 

Well I took the blowshield off and loosened the pressure plate realigned the disk put it all back together and the tranny slid right in. Thanks for the nudge Damon.

Now I have maybe another issue. The 82 clutch fork was offset, The 84-92 clutch fork is straight. I think I will need a longer adjuster rod. Has anybody experienced this?

I think I will start a new thread for this one.
