GM 3.1 liter heads on a 3.4l block

I have seen an older thread on this subject. My son and I bought a project 94 Pontiac firebird with a 3.4l. The motor was seized so we are rebuilding it. I found the threads about bolting on 3.1 liter aluminum heads and intake on the 3.4 liter iron block to increase horsepower. Is this still a viable modification? How much work is the swap? I was wondering as well how much the compression will go up with the stock pistons? We are going to have the block punched 20 over but I am afraid the compression will be too high?? My son wants to eventually turbo the engine and that will be definitely too high for a turbo motor.
Any info would be appreciated.
