Smog pump noisy

I have a 87 350 TPI Iroc Z. The smog pump is noisy any sounds like is rattles. I can actually here it through the firewall when engine is running. Is it shot? or can repair it? I suppose I cannot take the belt off to disable smog pump. Any help would be great. THANKS JIM

Re: Smog pump noisy

It's likely shot. The A.I.R. pump has some flimsy vanes inside that can rattle. I replaced a noisy one with a rebuilt Cardone unit and it's been good.

There is a way to remove the pump and re-route the belt, but I'm not sure how.

Re: Smog pump noisy

Yeah, it's likely just worn out inside. They get noisy, then they fail.

Fortunately on an 87 it's a separate belt that turns just the smog pump off the water pump pulley. You can remove the belt and/or remove the whole air injection system, if you want (only needed for emissions). The computer does not monitor it's functioning at all.
