distributor and oil pump mating

Ok so I've done distributor installs on v8s before and they always had a slotted post for the oil pump. Rotate it with a screw driver and get it to line up.

I'm work on my 88 2.8 and it has a hexagon post and i can't get it to seat for the life of me. It's a brand new distributor and i keep sending with like 1/8" gap.

Any tricks to get it to seat properly.

I let the distributor sit as far as it will go and hand cranked the engine so the rotor would rotate and mate up with the oil pump but after several cranks of the engine I'm still stuck with an 1/8" gap.

It is neither the oil pump drive or the gears that are keeping you from that last 1/8" , it is the O ring . A little clean axle grease on the O ring and a manly push WILL seat it all the way . Trust me , been there . done that .

Re: distributor and oil pump mating

Hey, thanks again. That got it installed. It still won't fire up, but I have to make sure I don't have it 180 off. I was lazy with it and not sure of the original marks. Plus I may have a bad FPR, but that helps for now. Thanks.
