l98 rebuild
So I got a l98 for cheap and it was seized. I pulled it apart and the connecting rod bearings and caps are a little scored but from what I can tell it didn't do any harm to the crank. The cylinders are fine after a quick honing. There was a dark almost black sludge in the oil pan. What do you guys think I should have done at machine shop I'm on a tight budget. Can I still use the connecting rod caps and reuse the cam it seems fine

Take everything to the machine shop and let them look at it. There is a reason the engine was seized up. The machine shop will advise you on what to do next.

You just gave me a good chuckle.
Do as suggested- have the machine shop check it out for you. There's a reason it seized up- might be something simple like the rings just rusted to their bores, or it could be something more serious. They'll also thoroughly clean the various oil passages which likely have more of that black sludge sitting in them.

Block needs to be hot tank cleaned to get all the sludge out.
Rods needs to be checked and maybe have big ends resized.
Crank needs to be checked for straightness.

Re: l98 rebuild
All that plus new cam bearings (installed), "finish" cylinder hone (no overbore- just honing the existing stock bores for good ring seal finish) plus a fresh set of rings, mains and rod bearings I got done recently for ~$350, with me doing all assembly of the bottom end after that. Now this was on a motor that needed essentially nothing done to it but we needed everything thoroughly checked out before we proceeded.
If you find the cylinders need an overbore or the big ends of the rods need resizing or the mains aren't straight, the cost goes up, obviously.

OK thanks I got the heads off today and only one piston was seized. It was just the ring was rusted to cylinder wall. I honed them and they look fine so I'm just going to have my local machine shop come by and look and see if they think I need anything done so thanks for all the responses.
