86 Iroc grounding issue
86 Iroc grounding issue
I have read a lot of threads about smog deletion and I think I have that part down. The issue is that in those threads I haven't seen anything discussed about the battery ground wire being attached to the smog pump mounting bracket. My question is do I have to leave that bracket or does the grounding move else where?
Re: 86 Iroc grounding issue
You can ground it elsewhere, find a bolt going to an unpainted surface and ground it there. Or sand/grind paint off off wherever you want it. Also, if your going to delete the carbon canister, just because of looks. You can move it under the front bumper area. Keeps a clean look but still works effectively as a tank vent.

You can ground the battery to ANY non exhaust, non moving part of engine.
A lot of the older carb'ed stock V8s had the battery ground cable bolted to the top of the ALT. bracket.
Some had them bolted to the front of block.
I like mine out of way, out of sight so I use the pass side front corner lower bolt hole on block and a short 3/8" thread bolt for my battery ground.
Just sand off any paint, rust, scale or grease from any place you plan to hook the cable to.

Just be sure not to use the upper bolt because it conveniently has one there. It will likely leak oil there, the hole goes all the way into the fuel pump rod bore. Generic pic from the web because I'm lazy, but it has an arrow pointing to it labeled "remove this bolt". The hole below it is fine, mine is there.
