how do I use a laptop to read the ECM?
I am interested in software that lets you plug a laptop to the ALDL so you can get readouts from the cars computer such as Air/Fuel mix, injector pulse width etc. Or any other means of accomplishing this. I am interested in learning more about how the cars ECM works and would love if someone could drop some knowledge on me or point me to a guide.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TGO!
....Check out www.moates.net You can get the physical cable http://www.moates.net/aldu1-and-cabl....html?cPath=64 that'll plug in between the laptop and the ECM. ...then you need software that'll run on your laptop. TunerProRT is one of a few that are pretty common. I think there's a minimal cost to download. There's a few other little steps to get TunerPro (or whatever you decide to use) set up for your specific ECM and year, car, engine, etc. etc. but that's about it. At this point you can datalog to see what the ECM is doing, and you can make changes to a file (BIN) on the laptop, but you'll have no way of getting that onto a new chip that you can plug into the computer. ....of course there's MORE harware required for that http://www.moates.net/burn2-chip-pro....html?cPath=64 plus the physical "chips"
....and then of course you can buy all in one units that's read, datalog, let you burn, and even emulate and make changes in real time like the autoprom http://www.moates.net/apu1-autoprom-....html?cPath=64 ....and check out EBL at http://www.dynamicefi.com/ which is actually like new software for the ECM, not simply changing BIN files on the "old" ECM ....if you're feeling overwhelmed I don't blame you. I was too, but I'm starting to learn myself.
Check out the DIY Prom board and read, read, read. I'd post a few links but there are SO many good threads and papers to get you started. Start with the stickies up top and read read read!!!!!! I think one of the coolest things about this stuff is that it's not simply big faceless companies with hundreds of engineers doing this. ....all this stuff is being designed, engineered and distributed by guys on these forums (and others). It's practically real time support on a lot of this stuff. Very cool. ..there's a few good threads about guys trying to wire up wideband o2 sensors in the Moates autorprom, and then actually coding Tunerpro to be able to read it. I guess I'm just fascinated by the stuff that's simply over my head. Maybe it's easy! LOL

Thanks in advance.
Instead of using a PROM, I am using an EEPROM, so that i can write, erase, and write again
