305 Camshaft Choice

What cam would work in this motor. Not worried about idle quality. Changing the springs on the heads to match the cam. I know the compression is low so the duration won't be much. Plan on bracket racing.

1979 305 LG-3 150 HP
45,000 miles on engine.
8.5 to 1 Compression dished pistons
1 5/8" long tube headers
Weiand Aluminum 8004 intake
600 Double Pumper Holley or Q-jet
4.30 gears
350 turbo trans 2800 stall
No computer controls

Just need something to get me through the summer until I put the 496 in.

Um, Lunati 60102 or 60103 might be a good choice. Some guys here have put those in their 305's with good results.

Summit 1103 is a cheap alternative. Don't quote me exact but if I remember right its 218 224 with around 444int 466exh. maybe 112LSA. It should make pretty good to 5200-5500 RPMS so its a good street cam and especially for a 305 you may not want to drop a lot of $ in. I ran it years ago in an LG4 build with stock heads.

Re: 305 Camshaft Choice

Thanks for the quick replies. I seen that 1103, it has a 112 lobe sep. that 1104 is .466 .466 with 224 224 duration a 114 love sep. Would I be better off with the 1104 that is straight or the 1103 that is a split pattern? Used an 1105 in a 400 small block and could not keep tires on it.

Re: 305 Camshaft Choice

Crane and Summit has one that is .450 218 ground on a 106 lobe sep angle. I wonder if that one would be a decent one for that setup.

Re: 305 Camshaft Choice

If you're talking drag race use primarily, the bigger K1104 will work. With the low compression and mediocre heads it's not going to do much in that motor without some RPMs going. Low RPMs will definitely be "soggy". Higher up it'll work because you're using sheer RPMs to get adequate velocity and cylinder filling happening. The single pattern design will work OK if you have the exhaust uncorked.

A set of Comp 981 springs or some cheap eBay "Z28" springs should be all you need out to about 6000 RPMs or so.

Re: 305 Camshaft Choice

That is what I was thinking on the single pattern cam Thanks. I might even grab a 3500 stall instead of the 2800 with that cam.
