87 350 car with stalling/throttle issues
Car is a stock 87 Iroc with the 350.
Three weeks ago I went out to start my baby and it took a ton of cranking for her to finally start (running very rough I might add). After she started up I held the car at 2500 rpm until she smoothed out and ran fine, I then attributed the problem to being bad gas (although I had run 2 tanks of gas through her) and went about my business.
Fast forward to two days ago......
I get in my car and get ready to start her so I can go on my lunch break. It then takes her about two minutes of cranking before I finally get her to stumble to a start (usually a quick blip of the key will start her right up although occasionally it can take a second or two). So same deal as before, I hold the revs at 2k until she smooths out and then head on my way.
But......
After I get maybe a quarter mile from my work she dies in the middle of a very busy road during the lunch rush. While I sit there with my hazards on trying to crank her to life I almost get rear ended three times so I decide to stop until a coworker with brighter tail lights can come sit behind me. When he gets to me another gentleman pulls up and offers me a jump seeing as how my voltmeter was starting to show the voltage getting lower and lower as I kept cranking on it. After another few minutes of cranking her on the cables she fires to life and seems to idle ok. I bid the gentleman adieu and head back to my work (I work at a dealership) and pull it on the service drive. When I get on the service drive she begins to surge from 500-1000 rpms until I finally turn her off seeing as how she was stinking up the service drive.
Well......
The mechanic looks her over for about an hour (its a mazda dealer but the mechanic claimed to be familiar with gm cars) and decides to problem is the throttle position sensor (when he would unplug it the car would stop surging/running rich and run ok, not like I remember it but a lot better). So he replaces the sensor and she starts up on the first blip of the key and runs pretty good. They close down for the day and send me on my way.
$145 later.....
I pull out on the access road and start slowly driving away. I then stop and hang a left and get on her a bit.....nothing. The motor cuts out (still runs but drops to idle) and back fires. I let off and try again but with half throttle, same problem again. I then flip around and put my foot to the floor and she takes off.
So now the car either has barely any throttle or full blown ***** to the wall power but no in between. Well since all the mechanics left I ditch the car at the dealer and hitch a ride back home.
The next day....
I go inside service and tell them of my problems and they tell me they'll check it out. Later on they get back to me and tell me that since the car is all hacked up (a couple broken wires and one wire that is laying on the manifold) that they wont work on it anymore and cant fix it (the few broken wires have been that way for years but idk about the burnt up wire thats laying on the driver manifold). Then today I go to start her and after a few cranks she starts cranking very slowly, so now I get to jump her when I have the time to do so.
Question time!
What could my whole throttle issue be now? Does the sensor have to be adjusted or whats all going on with that? Could the burnt wire be causing my problems (I'll try and get a pic of it tomorrow)? I just need my car running again because a few weeks before this I sold two of my four cars and my only other one should be getting picked up by the new owner this week so I will soon be carless. Sorry about writing a novel but I tried to break it up the best I could so that it could still be fairly easy to follow.
What do you guys think could be my problem other than the fact that I took it to a mazda dealer?

Sounds good. I don't think that they put a new fuel filter in when they put the new pump in

Re: 87 350 car with stalling/throttle issues
I had the sensor tuned by another ship and got the car running good.
Now however I drove it 24 miles to work just fine and when I go to leave it takes quite a while to start it and keep it running. The car is now idling at 1500 rpms and any blip of the throttle will make it cut out. Also when you put it in gear it'll die out as well.
Sound related to the tps junk or could it be something else?
