Power steering pump quandary, what do I do?
My PSP was leaking, so I replaced it with a reman from Autozone. I've not been super happy with the reman, so I decided to rebuild my old one. First time I've rebuilt one. Got the rebuild done, the only issue I had was a little trouble seating the main shaft bushing, as it has to be pressed in. I didn't have a strong enough tool to get it FULLY seated, but got it to within less than 1/8", and the front shaft seal went in totally flush with no problem, all other seals went in fine. I wasn't sure the busing issue would be a big deal, becasue fully seated or not, the entire length of the bushing is still in contact with the shaft. The problem is, I'm not sure whether or not the shaft turns freely enough. In the reman, it turns a little easier than mine does. I lubed the shaft with atf before I put it in (if you're thinking of a joke, now is the time....), but still had to tap it in--it didn't slide in. But I don't see how it could as tight as that bushing is in there. Before I took it apart for the rebuild, you could spin the shaft with your fingers, but it was still tough to get out of the housing, I had to tap it out with a socket and hammer. It's entirely possible I could have screwed it up, it was my first rebuild, but I'm curious what others might say. As it is now, I can spin the shaft with my hand with medium effort by putting a 3/8" allen in it. So it's not horrible, just not as free as the reman. The guy at Autozone suggested it might need to be actually run on the engine under pressure to fully lube the shaft. Could be, but I don't know enough to say for sure, and he wasn't sure either. I want to use my rebuild and take the reman back, it's worth $50 to me if it works. Should I try it or not?

I'd go ahead and try it... worst thing that can happen is, you'll have to swap the reman back on.
After it gets acoupla hundred thousand miles on it like the old one had, it'll prolly turn easy, too.
The shaft bushing isn't lubed w pressurized fluid AFAICR; it is on the intake, or suction, side of the fluid circuit. But, if it has grooves (seems like they all do but I could be misshapen) it should get enough fluid all around it to assure its survival, just from being immersed in the reservoir.

Sofa, I could have sworn it got a little easier to turn just with the hand turning it did. I did fill it with atf and let it sit for a couple hours just to see if it leaked. And yes, the bushing does have grooves in it. If I had it to do over, I'd have just left the old bushing in there, I'm not sure there was much wrong with it. I just thought I could press it out and the new one in easier than I ended up being able to do. I've gotta change my break hoses today, so I think I might do this PSP swap too while I've got the wheels off the ground and etc. We'll see how it goes. Either it works or it doesn't. LOL

Hey Sofa, what do you know? It works! Put my rebuild on and it works just fine, actually better than the reman. Would you believe it? All I have to do now is keep an eye out for any leaks. I'm a little suspicious of the low pressure hose clamp, think I'll replace it. Other than that, so far so good. It did loosen up a little more once I put on the engine and let it run for a minute or two. All that's left now is to go to the Zone and collect $55 for that POC reman. Hahaha.....
