350HO Vortec questions...

I've ruled out putting an L05 replacement in...not gonna fix one problem with another problem. Been looking at the 350 H.O. vortec motor. I want to do mods to my vette and nudge it into the 12's...but i don't want to go through all that bs with an old L98 which is beginning to show its age. my questions

1) is there a TPI base out there that is compatible with the vortec heads?

2)is there any way to make some EGR provisions (i'm in the smog **** dictatorship of california)? I did a search already and a few people talked about this but weren't real specific.

3)is there anyother relatively cheap crate motor(s) out there that i can use that isn't just replacement-quality?

any info will be greatly appreciated.....

Check SDPC's Vortec TPI intake. They've got an EGR kit for their intake. I couldn't really tell how easy it was to get set up, you might want to call 'em for more info.

The February 2002 Chevy High Performance issue has a cover story about that TPI Vortec manifold, including the EGR setup. The base alone runs you $400.

Scoggin-Dickey managed a whopping 354 HP @ 4800 RPM with HOT cam & 1.6 rollers, Edelbrock runners & throttle body. They had to do some grinding on the runners to get them to clear the intake mount bolts.

Not too impressive. Not going to get you into the 12's.

Hey five7kid,

I read that CHP article. One question is, is there an EGR set up like that available for TBI? It looked pretty simple.

I'm sure you'd have to modify the intake to accept it, but from what the pictures in the article show, it don't look to hard.

Think it's do-able?

The only ones I've seen or heard of were for specific applications: Like the factory Vortec truck TBI, the HO 350 ZZ4 conversion kit, the Edelbrock TBI conversion setup, the Vette TPI, and the CHP article. Buddy here also did a Vette Big Mouth on a ZZ4 and fab'd up a line from the exhaust to the intake.

I don't imagine that it would be that hard to do. Make sure you use the insulating sleeve over the tube, though.
