Timing set advice for Vortec 350 with L98 cam
Timing set advice for Vortec 350 with L98 cam
Ok guys, I'm trying to make sure I order the right timing set.
The car is a 1988 L98 Iroc
I plan to order this short block, because it's cost effective, and I cannot find an actual L98 short block, and from most of the shops around here, this is cheaper than rebuilding mine. Now I know I may have to drill for the spider, but it does have the bosses, if they aren't drilled and tapped. I have vortec heads that I ordered from summit, and I know they have valve lift limitations. I ordered 1.6 roller tip rockers to use with the stock cam.
Here is the link to the short block: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hpe-sp04/overview/
Any help on what timing set I should use would be greatly appreciated.
Also, this may sound silly, but will my accessories all bolt to this without issue?
Backstory if interested, although may be irrelevant.
I bought my L98 with a bad head gasket, after removing heads I can find no evidence of a bad head gasket. It did have compression gas in the cooling system. I have not had the heads pressure tested or checked for cracks. Rather than disassemble the whole thing and check the block/rebuild etc, this is the easiest route for me.

The short block from summit HAS to have the roller setup all drilled already. The 1996 and up motors were only roller cam.

Your TPI intake won't bolt onto Vortec heads, FYI. You would need a rather pricey Vortec TPI lower intake to do that. Assuming your old L98 heads are in good condition (no cracks or other issues) you can bolt them right onto that shortblock. All your front end accessories will bolt right on.
Anyway... since you're just trying to get 'er up and running again, I assume you're going to reuse your stock cam, lifters, valvetrain, etc. Easy swap over to a later Vortec short block. You need this timing chain set which is designed for factory-style roller cams/blocks:

You can spend more, but it won't work any better. It's a quality set and comes with everything you need to bolt it onto any factory roller cam small block from 87 through the later Vortec engines.

I already bought vortec heads and a scoggin dickey lower. I'm loosely following an old super chevy article. The showed 305hp (flywheel obviously) on a tpi 350 with out of the box vortec heads, and the scoggin dickey lower, with no other changes what so ever. I'm adding 1.6rr's, 24lb injectors, afpr, hooker shorties and a y pipe.
