My car hadn't run for years when I bought it. (Runs great now thanks in great part to the guys on this board!)

Anyway, I'm sure the A/C system needs a big time recharge. If the system is empty does it have a sensor that prevents the compressor from turning on? I turn my A/C on and the compressor will not engage. I'm guessing it's because the system is empty.?

Or do I have a whole other issue here?

Yes, It's a low pressure switch and is mounted on the receiver drier. When the system gets low on refrigerant this switch keeps the compressor from kicking in and burning it up.


For testing ONLY you can un-plug this switch then put a jumper wire across the two wires, this will test the clutch engagement and see if the compressor is locked up or rattling. Only run it jumped for a minute or so, being low on refrigerant will reduce oil flow through the system......
