The 1st thing you need to do is figure out exactly what you have. You say it's been rebuilt. That may not be a good thing if shorter rebuilders pistons were used. These piston may have a 1.540",or,1.548" pin hgt. vs the stock 1.56".These will sit lower in the bore at TDC,thereby lowering the compression & detonation resistance. On the other hand, someone may have used flat tops trying to raise compression for the smog heads that are stock to your engine.Going to Vortecs could raise the compression to up over 10:1.
Just swapping a set of Vortecs in place of a set of smog heads is a 30 to 50 HP gain on a stock 350 bottomend, depending on it's condition.
1st you need to identify which heads & pistons(dish,or flat top along with the volume of any dish) are currently in the engine, then you need to measure piston to deck hgt @ TDC,then you can lay out a plan to get where you need to be.
