LB9/335 advice
LB9/335 advice
I read a few good posts here on this type of build but none that I have read finish with what is working best for them now. I would like some advice on the best stroker kit for the $, the heads that work best with this kind of compression (cc?) and cam. I plan on at least upgrading the runners and
If I were to get the original heads machined as best they can be, how much hp would I be losing roughly compared to aluminum aftermarket, do I need the aluminum to keep detonation from occurring? . Can the stock intake be ported to match larger runners/heads ect? Maybe a recommended aftermarket and why please, How big of TB (cfm)? I know the bigger the better but how big would I required without losing to much. The reason to keep the stock heads would be for the looks of original, I had this car for 24 years now and it is completely rust free, untouched and bone stock. I'm not looking to have the fastest one ever built but I do want to do a smart build without wasting money/time or restricting the motors capability to much.

Throw the 305 block in the trash and install a "bore kit" in the engine instead of a "stroker kit". Costs a small fraction of the other, gives you more than twice as much improvement. Meaning, the 33x is THE VERY DEFINITION of a non-smart build that wastes money and time.
TPI is 30 yrs old now. Nothing about it has changed much for the last 25. Whatever has worked in the past, still works. (which is, getting rid of TPI) Whatever has disappointed people in the past, will still disappoint. (which includes, messing with TPI, and building a 334) Not a lot of sense repeating what has been well and widely shown NOT to work, and ending up with a $3000 turd that gets drilled at stop lights by soccer moms in Kia minivans.

Re: LB9/335 advice
Trickflow small bore 175 cc heads seem to be best out the box solution for 305's. Next maybe set of gm vortecs
Re: LB9/335 advice
The car is all original 85 Irock. Once again:1 The reason to keep the stock heads would be for the looks of original,2 I'm not looking to have the fastest car ever built. 3 something a little different. I'm not building a race engine, Please save you're opinions

Re: LB9/335 advice
It will cost you some but if you had a set of 416 or 081 castings they can be ported really well. Enough to make some decent power but the intake needs changed to support it
With the stroker the heads have a 58 cc chamber so you will want a decent sized dish piston to keep compression down under 10:1 with iron heads. If aluminum you could get up near 11:1 depending
Tfs 175 heads flow around 240's. I believe a ported set of 305 heads could easily see 230's with same valve, maybe more. Hard to say
You could paint the heads with a textured paint to make them look like iron heads. Nobody would really know since accessories cover most of the heads

Re: LB9/335 advice
It will cost you close to TWICE as much to buy that stroker kit, as to buy a better block.
As would be considered consistent with
And then when you get done you'll have LESS power and less torque than a 350.
DON'T go the stroker route on a 305 block. Totally bad idea, waste of money. Not really an "opinion": just do the math. Math isn't "opinion". 2 + 2 = 4. 4 > 3. Simple stuff like that. Spend more and get less is NEVER the route to superiority of ANY kind.
People always want to come on here and talk about different. Well, there are names for people who spend more and get less; we call them "different" when patronizing them, so as not to hurt their sensitive feelings. If that's not the kind of "different" you'd like to be, then the 33x is not for you.
You can retain your stock heads, if you want to keep that limitation. You can even install 1.94" (350 size) intakes in them, and make them flow about the same as 350 heads. With a good port job (NOT a first-timer's DIY) you can get them up into high 300s of HP kind of range. (although you won't get that with TPI, not even close) That's basically enough to where TPI is the insurmountable limitation, aka brick wall, that you're not going to get around except with nitrous or the like.
At some point, you have to sit down and do the math. Put whatever pre-conceived prejudices you have about things you've heard or thought of out of your mind, look past that, and be honest with yourself. You can spend less and get more (350) or spend more and get less (33x). It's just that simple. You're not the first to have this idea, and it wasn't any good for the other people that got it and acted on it, either.
