EGR Solenoid part 1

We needed to replace the EGR solenoid on an 88 Firebird GTA with 305 F series engine. This solenoid has been out of production. Rock Auto listed a solenoid , AC Delco 214339 but it has some physical difference. Mainly the mounting and the electrical connector. Rock auto has a connector that will mate with this solenoid. However, the original connector in the car harness, has a very short lead and is tucked between the engine and the firewall. This would make cutting the old one off and crimping the new one very difficult. So after some research I asked AC Delco what would mate with the PT107 connector that is in the car. They said a PT134. When I questioned that both were listed as males in the catalog, I was told the PT134 was a female. So I bought a PT134 and a PT2830, mates to the new EGR solenoid, from Rock Auto. The PT134 turned out to be a male, however, the contacts are typical Molex contacts available at Radio Shack. I extracted the males from the PT134, connected the new Females to the bare ends of the PT2830, inserted them into the PT134 housing and now have an adapter cable.
Installation of the solenoid required a slight bend to the metal bracket and enlarging the hole in the base so I could mount it under one of the coil screws. It is important that the EGR valve is connected to the vented port on the solenoid. Note there is a filter on the back of the solenoid. If you attach a hose to one of the ports and with no power connected you can blow through it, that is the port that connects to the EGR valve. It allows for the vacuum in the line to the EGR valve to be vented when the solenoid closes letting the EGR valve close. Hook it up backwards and you will always have a vacuum leak.
One lead of the solenoid is always hot with the ignition on. The controller connects the other lead to ground in pulses to modulate how much the EGR valve is open. There is no EGR valve opening when the engine is cold, at idle or at WOT.

Re: EGR Solenoid part 1

Thanks bop11. My car does not have this issue (as far as I know), but it is nice to see this information posted.

Bop11, very good write up. Does the existing wire on PT2830 have a female connection on the other that you had connected to PT134?
