305 Cam advise

Hey everyone, looking for some sound advise for my project. Camaro has a 305 with 081 heads that I'm currently doing a P&P just along with deshrouding. Compression is stock, I assume 8.5 to 1. Engine is a roller cam setup still with stock peanut cam. My rear is 3.73, and I'm still running a stock convertor but I already have planned to run at least the S10 convertor if not higher. Wondering if I can get some ideas on what cam I should run. I still have a mechanical fuel pump, and I would like to stick with that. I wanted to run a LT4 Hotcam but I know that isn't a best choice. Car is not going to be raced often, just want some nice pick up and go with a much better sound. Exhaust is hedmen shorties to a catless y pipe setup, catback is 3in. Vehicle is running a 650 Holley Carb with a stock intake(that will be changed as well, not decided yet).

Did someone change it to a retro-roller setup and put a "peanut cam" in it?

Yes the block is a 14093627. I haven't figured out due to lack of knowledge if my Pistons are dished or flat top. They have 4 valve reliefs but a very small dish. I've read somewhere that that is how the HO blocks are.

U really need to nail your compression ratio with and unknown engine combination. Yes u can do this with the block in the car and the heads off. Heres a link that shows how it can be done: http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/...er-size-2.html

BTW i tried this and failed because i used petrol jelly and its not strong enough to hold the plexiglass. U need strong red axle grease.

Once u have the piston volume and the head chamber vol measured w/liquid u only need the gasket compressed vol and u have as accurate c.r. as any professional race team.

Find your compression then choose your cam.

It would be 9.3 to 1. It came out of a TPI model and is still stock. Looks like all 305 with roller cams were 9.3-1

Vash I've learned never to trust publish specs for c.r. or to calculate it. Actual numbers can be very different. If u really want a cam to match your requirements then measure the Vols yourself. If u just want to guess your c.r. then u can guess your cam to - same thing. Sorry if this sounds indifferent but no needs any help to make guesses. They can do that well enough themselves.
