Finally running, but wont stay steady.
Hey guys,
So I have made a couple posts before, but here is the background on the car:
I found a guy that had let this '86 sit for a decade or so. Bad fuel sat in the car and ruined anything it touched. As a result, i had to replace the fuel tank, fuel pump, and I just put new injectors in.
After all this, I cranked and cranked but the car wouldn't start. it backfired and my old man said that meant the timing was off. With no baseline, we loosened the distributor and rolled it around until the car finally lit off. After it got warm and we unplugged the EPS or whatever that plug is called, we timed it a 6 degrees BTDC like the hood sticker said.
Now the issue: The car starts up, but it has trouble finding itself. it is definitely better than it was initially, but if you give it some throttle and release, the idle revs way low, then way high, then way low, and eventually finds a nice smooth spot.
I am new to these cars. Is there a way to set anything that I am missing? We had a Code 44, lean exhaust. I wasn't sure if that was our issue?
What I basically want to know it, what procedures do I need to do when retiming and starting a motor that has not ran in so long.
Thanks in advance

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me, if u have a vacuum leak it will run just as you described. Had a blazer one time do the same exact thing and ended up being a disconnected vacuum line. Check all your vacuum lines, easiest way I usually find em is pop hood while car running and listen for a hiss or suction noise, if it's running like that the leak should be loud enough to hear. If u can't hear anything can get some carb cleaner and spray on and around vacuum lines until u hear idle change. Why was the car parked in the first place?

I found it I think. Definitely a vacuum leak. It acts like its around the ninth injector? When I spray the carb cleaner on it, it revs up! Could the ninth injector have a vacuum leak? It doesn't seem vacuum related

Ike,
He ninth injector is sometimes referred to as a Cold start injector. It's between the #3 and #5 cylinders and looks like a small injector with a 1/4 inch steel fuel line that runs to the rear of the drivers side fuel rail.
I believe that it helps with cold start up, and doesn't do anything afterwards.
I think my leak may be directly next to it, where the PCV hose meets the intake.

Re: Finally running, but wont stay steady.
SOLVED
The ninth injector was bent. There is one bolt that hold it in, and at some point it bent. This caused the injector to not be seated and a vacuum leak.
Adjusted the TPS and IAC. She fires up and idles steady!
