Oil gauge sending unit, Oil pressure sending it - '91 V6 3.1

Hi Guys,

i'm troubleshooting an little oil leak, which is coming from the rear.
I have been a reading alot, much directions to look for the "leak"
There's one i can't get my head around. Long story, short

I have a '91 V6
Does this engine have 2 oil sensors?
  1. Oil gauge sending unit
  2. Oil pressure sending unit - bottom of engine, above Oil Filter

Does a '91 V6 have a Oil gauge sending unit? And if so, as a lot stated, the unit is on the rear of the engine, near the distributor

thanks

If you are leaking at the rear of the engine , near the distributor , then you more than likely need to replace the O ring on the distributor . Trust me on this , if you do a search of the V6 subforum here with the term "distributor O ring" you'll see that it's a common failure item and place of oil leakage on our V6s . Good luck ....

Cool , just so you know the full story , the distributor O ring in our V6s is responsible for keeping sealed a pressurized oil path , and as it ages and dries out and shrinks , it begins leaking . A bit at first then more and more depending on the rate of deterioration . Now , you asked about an oil sending unit , and that I'm not sure of on your year . On my 89 , there is only one unit down by the oil filter and it controls both the pump and the gauge . I have heard there were two sender setups , one for pump and one for gauge , used on some sixes and if there is a sender at the top rear of your block , then yea that could be leaking if present . The last thing I could think of , provided you ruled out the backs of the valve covers , would be the so called "China Wall" where the lower intake manifold meets the block at the top rear of the engine . If a sender is present and leaking it would be the easiest fix . Next in difficulty would be the distributor O ring , maybe a close tie with the valve covers , depending on how well you understand ignition timing VS how good of a job ya do scraping old gaskets , with the "most difficulty" category reserved for the china wall .

I know it sounds crazy but swiping the woman's make up mirror for a quick peek back there with a flashlight may have happened once or twice in history , but the only men who survived were the ones lucky enough not to get any oil on the mirror anywhere .

Good Luck ......

bingo....

It's the Distributor o-ring.
Went in with light, from the driver side, reached for it and bingo, oil!

Checked with a light from the passenger side and the oil trail starts at the Dis, and goes down...

Will replace the o-ring tomorrow right away!

Thanks for the tips

Ps. There's no other oil gauge sending unit btw
