dipstick measurements

Hi there, my son has lost the dipstick to my 87 iroc with the 305 TPI, however I was able to get a universal replacement. Does anyone on here know how high up the stick the high/low oil level marks are, as well as how high i need to set the stop at the top of the stick to get the correct depth, any help would be great.

Thanks
Ron

My dipstick is aftermarket so I can't give you the measurement, but what you can do is just go ahead and do an oil and filter change on it. After starting it up and then letting the oil all settle again, you will then know where the correct amount of oil comes to on that dip stick.

Re: dipstick measurements

Either that or borrow the dip stick from another third gen owner, put them side by side, and mark yours

Re: dipstick measurements

If you can't find an OEM dipstick to get a measurement you have 2 options. Replace the oil and filter. Install the recommended quantity of oil. Start the engine briefly to make sure the filter is full. With the engine off, the oil is where it's supposed to be. Adjust or remark the dipstick to that level.

The other option isn't easy on a third gen or a SBC because the dipstick tube is in the block and not the pan. With the oil pan removed and sitting level on the floor, fill the pan until it reaches the top of the sump. You don't want it much higher than that or the oil will get whipped around by the crankshaft. I guess you could measure how deep the oil is in the pan then with the dipstick installed into the tube, see how far it extends below the block. Full mark should be at the oil level. Once the dipstick is marked, reinstall the pan, refill with oil. It will take a little extra oil to fill the filter.
