Complete ignition system overhaul 305 LG4

As the title suggests, I'm thinking my next project will be a complete ignition system overhaul for my 1985 Trans Am LG4...the only problem is I'm not sure exactly what parts I should get in order to do that. I don't want something for super extreme performance, I just want something reliable. My plan is for this car to be a good daily driver and make the LG4 the best it can be until I can afford a complete engine/transmission swap in the distant future. So any suggestions and advice would be very appreciated!

I guess what I'm asking is what type of distributor I need to buy, and if I buy a complete distributor what else would I need besides the plugs and wires? I've tried doing some research but I can't really find any straight answers...

You do not need a new distributor. If you do, it will be a cheap Chinese with soft plastic parts.

Just buy a good quality Standard Motor Products DR450 cap and DR318 rotor. Get a good quality OE style wire set as well.

I would replace the distributor. I've replaced a few of the large cap distributors over the years with re-man units with no problems. The replacement dist will come with a new pickup coil and ICM. Replace the coil, cap and rotor at the same time.

Add wires and plugs and everything will be new. No need for the more expensive aftermarket pieces on a standard LG4.

100% agreement with that statement. and even on a mildly modified motor. AND....you will NEVER get higher reliability than you will with stock ignition parts.
