Occasional weird idle and CEL?

Hey guys, I've got a 1985 Trans Am, and I've always seemingly had a CEL. I tried reading it with a scanner, and with the paper clip method. I guess I will try the former again tomorrow.
I just put a set of headers on, with a new o2 sensor. The choke heater relay had been bad from a wiring/charging issue, and the bad wiring was replaced.
Now, every once in a while when I start my car it goes to the high idle and then once it comes off the CEL comes on, then it switches between high and regular idle and the CEL goes off when the high idle is active. Mostly stock, except for the headers and a chrome air filter .
Also, wire to o2 sensor is just a little short due to the slightly increased distance to the new o2 sensor location. Is there any way to fix this, I.e cut the wire and splice in some new wiring? Looking forward to a complete 3" exhaust and many roasted tires in celebration. As a side note, (one of many apparently), after driving around with open headers, my car feels MUCH faster in the butt dyno. Just wondering what kind of power increase I'd be looking at after replacing restrictive manifolds and a y pipe that crunches down to about a 1/2 inch. Thanks*!

*this thanks is for sofakingdom or whichever super awesome third gen geniuses help me out
