Stock o2 sensor with headers?

Hi there guys, I'm just about done installing my hooker headers on my 85 Trans Am, and I've got the stock O2 sensor out and whatnot but will it be fine for my headers or should I buy a new one? Thank you!

Re: Stock o2 sensor with headers?

If it worked before, it's "OK".

No way for anybody out here to know whether it actually is in need of replacement.

Main issue, besides that, will be, if it's too far from the engine to reach proper operating temp. In which case, you'll need to replace it with a heated one, and find the best way to power the heater circuit. Try it and see, go from there.

Really not sure if it worked before, cel was always on so my guess is no?

Depends... what was/were the code(s)?

Hardly ever hurts to replace something like that. Which is of course not the same as saying "you should" or "your old one is bad" or anything of the kind... think of it maybe as more, resetting the "shot clock" on replacing it in the future.

Well, I took it to a local O'Reilly's and they couldn't get their $400 code reader to even connect to read my ECU and the codes but I haven't changed the o2 sensor and it's factory so my guess is it could possibly be a root cause of my issue. Additionally I don't know if the wire that goes to the stock o2 sensor would be long enough to reach to the collector on my shorty headers.

Re: Stock o2 sensor with headers?

The wire *should* be plenty long to reach the collector on shorties. Whether you will need a heated o2 is a toss up and depends on your headers, I've been using the non-heated on my 1 3/4" primary headers, and although it does work, I'm suspecting it may be contributing to some weirdness with BLM. And for future reference, to get the codes from the computer you can jumper the A and B pins on the ALDL connector and it will blink them to you, no fancy computer required.

Awesome, once I get it up and running (hopefully with stock o2 sensor) I'll do that. Is there a thread or sticky about that?

Re: Stock o2 sensor with headers?

They're like $25. Swap it out. You are going to have to change it eventually anyway.

Re: Stock o2 sensor with headers?

yeah just get a new one, one less thing to worry about. if youre going through the work of a header swap, why cheap out on the last part? you said its stock so that thing is living on borrowed time
