timing on 86 LG4

ok, i know theres a trick to checking the timing on my car because when i went to check it, it was like 20 degress advanced. i've heard of a wire i have to disconnect to properly check my timing. can anyone help me on this one? also, the stock timing for my car is 0 degrees. how much should i advance it for better performance. i've heard about 2 degrees. am i correct? all my mods are in my sig. thanks!!

Theres a 4 wire connector right near the distributor that you disconnect to check the timing. Its on the passenger side.

You might be able to run more than 2, experiment with it.

I run 4-6 degrees on mine. I tried 8 but it didn't like it.
