383 cam question

383 cam question

So I built a 383 with trick flow 195 heads. My cam choice at the time was this https://m.summitracing.com/parts/cca-08-412-8. I havnt installed the motor yet but I'm on the final stage of the HSR intake install. I've had a couple people tell me that cam is way too small. The car is a daily driver but now I'm second guessing the cam. Should I go bigger before I put this motor in? I'm pretty green at this engine building thing. In fact this is my first one. Any opinions welcome. I'm hoping I don't need to change it.

Imo its small for that setup. You could go 10 deg bigger easily and drive near stock once tuned

Whats the compression ratio? Dont necessarily want too small a cam with high compression

Compression is around 10.5:1

Duration at 050 inch Lift: 212 int./218 exh is too small for a 350 in my experience, never mind a 383. I've ran a 240/250 hydraulic roller in a 383 in my 72 vette. Vacuum was marginal but the headlights, wiper doors & brakes all worked. The cam would have been ok straight straight drive and gears but was marinal with the TH400 automatic & 3.08 rear end. Engine builder screwed up.

The current 400 has a 230/236 hydraulic roller. Its too small but the new engine builder miscalculated the cars weight by 500 pounds. Ideally, have a custom cam found for your application. I'd call comp cams and see what they suggest.

I would think at least 228/234 with the 383 with the max being around 236/242 provided the other mods supporting are present.

BTR Brian Tooley Racing can give you custom cam specs for $20 if you fill out the details of the build.

Patrick G also has a good rep for $25

Ed Curtis of Flow Tech also does custom cams but you will have to provide all the info and buy the cam from Flow Tech before getting the specs.

I'm doing a 383 build right now. I had Daniel at Powell Machining/cam's grind mine. Its 232/233 .050 .545 int .547 exh. He grinds in house and checks with cam doctor. I've yet to put fire to cylinders but from looking at his fb page, he knows his stuff. I think it cost 350.00? He will need complete build list as stated above. I am at 10.79 static and 8.07 dynamic. A simulator Skinny ran for me put me around 450hp/tq but I think it will do better.

Yeah at that compression i would go abit bigger overall to keep cranking compression down. It will be abit sensitive to tuneup on pumpgas at higher cranking numbers
