Valve adjustments

What are the indicators that valve adjustments are in order? 1987 IROC-Z 305 5.0 TPI

No ticking when it's running (tells you they're not too loose), valves all close completely when they're supposed to (tells you they're not too tight)

Yup there are a few methods I usually do the EOIC method works well.

Well, that depends. Is it ticking because you're adjusting them and haven't finished adjusting? Or, did it just start ticking? In which case, you need to find out what's broken, bent or worn-out and repair/replace it.

I dnt have any ticking, basically just want to know what the symptoms are since a friend mentioned it but wasnt able to tell me how to determine if an adjustment was in order.
