ignition problems (help please)

i have a 1991 firebird that wont start. i put in a new battery and that was not my problem. when i turned the key over i did notice the whole ignition cylinder was real loose. you could move the whole thing in and out about 1/8 to a 1/4 of an inch. can i just replace the cylinder in the steering colomn and if so is it hard? any tips would be greatly appreciated

Can you hear the starter working at all when you turn the key? if it IS cranking over, then the ignition cylinder is not your immediate problem. Its kinda hard to guess without more info, but check the simple things first... Pull a plug wire and check for spark, check the fuses (Including the one under the hood by the battery holder if its fuel injected.), etc...
