Code 36

Some of you may have already experienced this but I thought I would share. I have been working on a friends 1988 GTA. One of the many problems was code 36 (MAF burnoff). There was no MAF on the car so my friend purchased a new Walker MAF from Rockauto. I worked on troubleshooting code 36 for several weeks as I got time in the evenings. The flow charts for toubleshooting codes 34, 35 and 36 are super nice and I got my electrical minded brother to help me through them. We did find a black groundwire to the MAF relay that looked questionable so we replaced it as well as put in a reman computer from autozone. I also replaced the connector going into the MAF (just as a guess).

Code 36 just would not go away and once in a while I would get a code 34 (MAF voltage too high).

I finally took the Bosch MAF off my Formula and installed it on his GTA. The code went away and stayed away for a solid week of driving the car. I couldn't really believe it but came to the conclusion the Walker MAF was bad. I went to autozone and bought a brand new one(it looked exactly like the walker one)... installed it and code 36 immediately came back. Took it back and they ordered a reman Bosch MAF for me. Installed and code 36 has been gone for 2 days.

As a side note... I also had a similar problem on this GTA with not one but two TPS sensors made by Standard. They both worked fine but once adjusted to .54 I could only put one bolt in it. Ordered a new AC Delco brand from Rockauto and both bolts go in with no problem.
