Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

I took alot of pictures, but additional reference material of an exploded illustration of the 1985 lg4 engine would be greatly appreciated. Particularly, the accessories brackets.

Re: Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

This is a 83 L69 but it's pretty much the same.

First, you put a stud in the front left exh man bolt position.

This photo shows headers and a spacer; imagine that it has an exn man instead.

Then the lower bracket for the PS pump goes on.

Then the one on the front of the head: note that the lower one of those toward the center of the engine also gets a stud (a short one), which the PS pump then goes onto. Leave the bolts loose so you can assemble the others to it.

Then all the others go on, on top of that.

This is how the pump goes on.

From there, shouldn't be too much trouble to figure out... there's a real small bracket that goes under the front intake bolt, and a spacer that goes on one of the A/C compressor bolts. I don't have close-up photos of all that unfortunately.

Make sure you put drop of sealer on the threads of the bolt in this hole. If you don't have the smog pump on it anymore (which in your pic it looks like you do), put a SHORT bolt in the hole anyway, otherwise you will have a MASSIVE oil leak from it.

I also own an '85 Trans Am with the LG4. SofaKingdom provided you many photos but was there something in particular you were looking for? I noticed that your water pump is not painted and has surface rust, and oddly enough, mine looks the same. My car is completely original under the hood. I'm wondering if they came that way out of the factory?

They came painted from the factory. Virtually all "rebuilt" ones are bare. Most people don't bother to paint them so they typically end up rusty.

Mine is aluminum BTW.

Re: Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

I hit it hard today finished the teardown, then installed Aerohead Racing 58 cc 601 castings w/1.94-1.50 stainles valves, bronze valve guides, 3 angle valve job, new springs and retainers, bowls blended, and gasketmatched, Summit K1103 grind 214/224 @ .050 443/465 on a 112 lsa, new lifters, Meling timing chain, new Comp pump rods, new Comp roller tip rocker, regasketed the entire engine with Cometics. My old *** is dragging, but really felt good to spin wrenches again.

We finished this evening. Thanks again for your input. The pictures really spead things up. I am amazed at how time consuming all the smog equipment was. It clearly added 10 hours minimum to the project.

You did a phenomenal amount of work in a short amount of time! I am truly amazed that these photos are just from the last two days. I understand now why you wanted the bracket photos. Yes, the smog equipment does take up a good bit of room. I was noticing the fuel pump, which I can only see the top of on my engine. I will be curious how the engine runs with the new cam. It looks like you connected the stock exhaust manifolds. So, I would probably do the same, and having said that, I want to know if a new cam will wake up the 5.0.

Re: Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

Dear lord. Why not get some used serpentine setup? I got a whole used system on ebay for like $250 shipped. Those v-belt systems are just a pain in the neck by comparison. Or heck a whole parts car. I just bought 4 camaros for $600 for parts. Heh.

Re: Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

Your recognition of the thrash was much appreciated. It took 2 men working almost continously a total of 25 hours or 50 man hours in 2 1/2 days. My is assistant was a 25 years young full time auto mechanic and myself a retired engineer and life-long hotrodder in my mid-50s.

The engines idle is near stock restricted by the full oem exhaust system, but with a touch of attitude. Total advance is 36 degrees. So far I am totally impressed with the throttle response. I think certain that the Aerohead Racing heads made a huge difference.

Tomorrow, I will disconnect the battery before reattaching the 4 pin ecm connector to the distributor.

Then take the Camaro out for a little "sport driving."

Re: Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

Rick, to each his own! I grew up with those V-belt systems and find nothing wrong with it. Perhaps the OP didn't have that cash laying around, or perhaps he doesn't mind it either. My father once told me when I was very young, "If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything at all!" Let's give positive feedback on a job well done shall we.

Let us know if you need any more photos. There is a lot of vacuum tubing, and I know that will take awhile to get routed again.

Re: Need an Exploded Illustration of LG4

Matching numbers original 1985 Z28 purrs like a kitten. One thing that you might find interesting; I purchased a one piece Fel-pro pan gasket, but quickly realized that clearing the oil pump pick-up was a nearly impossible task.. Therefore, I spliced the gasket at the dip stick hole. Then repaired the splice with black Permatex silicon sealent. ZERO leakage. All other gaskets utilized on the project came from Cometics. Cometics gaskets are viton rubber over a metal core. Pricey, but again no leaks
