Check Engine Light

Hi all, have a 1982 2.8L V6. Does anyone have a way to determine what
to replace to correct this problem? I suspect its heat related since it occurs more often in hot weather. It's hit and miss. I am driving along and randomly the "check engine" light comes on, if I pull up to a light and stop, it goes off and does not immediately come back on when I pull out. It may not come on again for the duration of the trip, but you never know. It is not speed related, just comes and goes. Been around for a long time, checked
engine coolant levels and oil to be sure they were not the problem. Replaced the engine thermostat to be sure that was not the problem. Have OBDII and converter cable to OBDI but have read elsewhere that they don't work. I have been told to ignore it but it just bugs me.

Ummmm.... the engine? A V8 would work wonders.

Seriously, what codes does it show? (Hint: don't bother with "OBDII" and "converter cable" and all that) You can buy a whole box of code readers, for like $1 per hundred, that work about a thousand times better than that ... other. http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...r-Clips-Jumbo/
