swapping lock cylinder in my column

I have an 83 trans am that needs a new steering column. The only yards that have what im looking for don't have the keys to the column. Could I swap out the lock cylinder from another column? Would it have to be from the ame year, or would one from say an 85 work? Would this be really difficult? TIA.

Do a search of : ray+buck+asylum . Ray has instuctions that
will guide you through changing that lock cylinder . His site
has lots of pictures and text and shows the tools needed.
Look for the Tech link. Then go to steering and suspension.
There you will find tilt column repair You can buy a new
lock cylinder at nearly any auto parts place for $20.00 or less.
